The age-old question: electric or petrol? While the higher upfront cost of EVs is a common objection, the total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis often tells a very different story. Let's do the math with real 2026 numbers for India.
We'll compare the Tata Nexon EV (₹14.49 Lakh) vs the Tata Nexon Petrol (₹10.99 Lakh) — same vehicle, different powertrain, over a 5-year, 80,000km ownership period.
The Nexon EV costs ₹3.5 Lakh more upfront. However, after applicable government subsidies (FAME III + State), the effective premium reduces to approximately ₹2-2.5 Lakh in most states. Registration fees and road tax waiver for EVs saves another ₹80,000-1.5 Lakh depending on state.
Petrol Nexon: 14km/l efficiency × 80,000km = 5,714 litres × ₹103/litre = ₹5.88 Lakh
Nexon EV: 7 km/kWh efficiency × 80,000km = 11,428 kWh × ₹7.5/unit (home charging) = ₹85,714 (₹0.86 Lakh)
Savings: ₹5 Lakh over 5 years on fuel alone.
Petrol car maintenance over 80,000km (service + consumables): ~₹1.5 Lakh. EV maintenance over 80,000km (no oil changes, simpler brakes due to regen): ~₹45,000. EV saves approximately ₹1.05 Lakh on maintenance.
EV insurance is typically 10-20% higher than equivalent petrol cars due to higher repair costs and battery cover. Over 5 years, the additional cost is approximately ₹30,000-₹50,000.
EV resale value has historically been lower due to battery degradation concerns. However, with Tata's 8-year/1.6 lakh km battery warranty becoming standard, this gap is closing. Currently, a 5-year-old Nexon EV retains about 45-50% of its value vs 55-60% for the petrol version. Difference: approximately ₹1 Lakh disadvantage for EV.
| Cost Item | Petrol Nexon | Nexon EV |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase (after subsidies) | ₹10.99L | ₹12.49L |
| Fuel / Electricity | ₹5.88L | ₹0.86L |
| Maintenance | ₹1.50L | ₹0.45L |
| Insurance | ₹1.20L | ₹1.60L |
| Resale Value | -₹6.04L | -₹5.62L |
| Net Cost | ₹13.53L | ₹9.78L |
Over 5 years, the Nexon EV costs approximately ₹3.75 Lakh less to own and operate than the petrol Nexon — despite the higher purchase price. The math is clear: electric vehicles are cheaper over their lifetime, and the savings will only increase as petrol prices continue to rise.
